Staying online in Dubai

5G is universal in Dubai and Abu Dhabi — the UAE has the highest 5G coverage rate in the Gulf. Etisalat (now 'e&') and du each have ~99% population coverage. Roaming from outside the GCC is expensive; an eSIM or local SIM is mandatory unless your home plan has 'Asia' included.

The eSIM route (recommended for most visitors)

Best provider: Airalo (e& or du backbone) or Holafly.
Typical pricing: Airalo: $9 for 1GB / 7 days, $17 for 5GB / 30 days. Holafly: $24 unlimited / 5 days.

WhatsApp / FaceTime / Skype audio + video calls are partially blocked in the UAE — eSIMs from outside don't fix this; the block is at the network level. Use the licensed alternatives (Botim, ToTok) or an iCloud Private Relay / VPN if you must.

The local SIM route

Operators worth using: e& (Etisalat, best coverage), du.
Where to buy: Both have airport counters that aren't a rip-off — tourist plans are AED 50-100 for 10-30 GB / 14 days. In-mall shops also fine.
Registration: Passport + entry stamp / Emirates ID required. Activation is in-person, ~15 min.

Public WiFi

Dubai Metro stations, malls, hotels, and Free Zones: extensive free WiFi. Beach areas: hotel-specific. Public WiFi nationwide is generally clean but be aware: VoIP (WhatsApp / FaceTime calls) is blocked even on it.

Local apps to install before you arrive

Careem — Uber's regional rival; usually slightly cheaper + driver quality is better
Talabat / Noon Food / Deliveroo — food delivery
Botim / ToTok — local VoIP apps (the workaround for the WhatsApp call ban)
RTA Dubai — official transit app for Metro / bus / Nol cards
Apple Maps over Google Maps — Apple has slightly better Dubai mall + indoor data
